Think Outside The Box event plug
Feb. 22nd, 2011 10:53 pmThere's a campaign called Think Outside The Box just launched in Cambridge but looking to go national campaigning on forms, toilets, changing rooms and dress codes to be made more accessible for and inclusive of non-binary-gendered people. If you are interested in it and free come along to the launch meeting this Thursday evening (sorry for the short notice).
The meeting is 7:30pm, 24th February, Cavonius Centre, in the Stephen Hawking Building, Harvey Court, West Road.
Further blurb:
"CUSU LGBT is launching a new campaign, Think Outside the Box, aimed at raising awareness of and accessibility for gender identities other than “male” and “female”, such as gender queer, neutrois, bigendered or gender-fluid to name a few.
The campaign, initially aimed at the University, challenges them to make a number of changes including providing “other” and “prefer not to say” as possible responses for the gender field on forms, to providing individual unisex toilet and changing facilities and gender neutral dress codes for events.
These changes are beneficial to more people than non-binary-gendered people, from transgendered people in the process of transitioning between any two genders to people who prefer not to give their gender for whatever reason. The campaign challenges the need to constantly categorise people into the two binary genders as society does at present. Dr Julian Huppert MP has given his support to the campaign, as part of his ongoing work towards improving legal recognition and protections for trans people and we are talking to the city council about some of their gendered individual toilets.
The people organising the campaign have plans for a national campaign; we are keen to consult people about this, especially trans* people, and have a number of people interested in running other local campaigns, so this is just the beginning.
So if you are interested in the campaign and finding out more, discussing ideas or being involved either locally or nationally head over to our website at www.lgbt.cusu.cam.ac.uk/think or come along to our launch event on Thursday 24th February:
TOTB Launch, 24th February, 7:30pm Cavonius Centre, Harvey Court
Come along to find out about the campaign, ask questions about the reasons behind the campaign or discuss plans for the future, both local and national. There'll be an introduction for people new to the issues and then a discussion so bring your questions, your ideas, your concerns and your enthusiasm and help us get this campaign going both in Cambridge and outside.
There is a facebook event for those on facebook."
